Ro Brahmand on fashion, fear compasses and romanticizing regular life

Chances are you’ve already meet Ro — one of social media’s rising style stars, with a refreshingly unique take on dressing. But it’s not just her personal style that keeps us tuned in. Ro’s authentic, cheeky, and laugh out loud funny personality is what differentiates her from the rest.

In our conversation with her, Ro gets honest on her greatest inspirations, her most cherished rituals, and why mom knows best.

Let’s start this conversation on our very favorite topic: talking about strong women. We know that your mom is a major inspiration for you. How has she and other influential women touched your life?

"My mum is the most remarkable human I know. Any redeeming quality I have has been directly inherited from her. My mum is truly one of the most empowered and empowering women I know which is inspiring in and of itself but even more so when placed in the context of her life. My mum immigrated to Canada in her early 20s — with no community, western education or financial resources — from a country that views women as second class citizens with no rights or freedoms. She left her family and everyone she knows and loves behind in pursuit of a life that was better than what she knew. It brings me to tears when I think about how much my mum has sacrificed, about the woman she “grew up” to be, about the life that she built. My heart could burst with pride."

Whether it’s a piece of advice or a cherished piece of jewelry, we’re infatuated with the treasures that get passed down. What’s the best heirloom these women have left you?

"The treasures passed down to me by mum come in the form of incredible life advice. Anyone who knows me has heard me say this about a million times but in a long list of soundbites my mum has given me, there is one that plays daily"...

“Follow your fear compass. The things in life that scare you, that put that little pit in your stomach, are the things you should run towards. They are the exact things that will make you grow and evolve as a human being.

Let’s talk content! We’re sure followers often discover you via your sense of style, but it’s your fun, genuine personality that keeps us all particularly obsessed with your content. We love how you let us into your life (and make us laugh throughout). How do you decide which personal parts of your life and personality to share?

"I am unbelievably fortunate to have found a corner of the internet that is encouraging, good natured, reassuring and constructively honest… It makes it so easy to let my guard down and just be myself. There are of course negative comments that trickle in from time to time but they are always from “non-followers” and most of the time, before I can even get to the negative comment, one of my internet friends is in there coming to my defence."

"There are certain elements/relationships I choose to keep private out of respect, recognizing that internet visibility isn’t on everyone’s list! My fiancé is extremely private, so are some friends and other family members. Other than that, me/my personality are pretty much all on the table."

"For me, fashion has always been about storytelling. Every outfit I put together reflects a mood, an era, a reference, or even just a feeling I want to embody that day."

On that note, how do you think personality and style interact? Does your sense of self come out in how you dress?

"Absolutely — I think style and personality are intrinsically linked — what you wear is one of the most immediate ways to communicate who you are."

"For me, fashion has always been about storytelling. Every outfit I put together reflects a mood, an era, a reference, or even just a feeling I want to embody that day."

"At the core of it, my personal style is just an extension of my personality."

Social media can be such an echo chamber, where we see the same microtrends rinsed and repeated before they quickly go out of style. How do you stay inspired on the internet?

"I try not to rely too heavily on the internet, although I do love myself a good Substack and Pinterest scroll. I try to make a conscious effort to seek out new influences. Vintage archives, old runway shows, interior design colour stories —those are the things that spark something in me. I also love following creators who have a distinct point of view, even if it’s totally different from mine. There’s something so inspiring about people who dress or create purely for themselves, without chasing trends."

"At the end of the day, I think the internet is an amazing tool, but inspiration should come from everywhere—art, travel, architecture, film, even just people-watching. The less I rely on trends, the more personal and exciting my style (and content) feels."

We need to know: what  up-and-coming brands are on your radar right now?

"Fidan Novruzova, Liberowe, Kuzyk, Our Legacy and this is a cheat answer but since launching her own brand… Phoebe Philo…"

Last Q. We’re big on the rituals — the sacred routines that ground us in our day-to-day. What rituals power your life?

"I used to feel my most fulfilled while traveling, going to a new restaurant, buying a new outfit. And while those things still excite me, I quickly learned that I wasn’t actually achieving “happiness” but rather chasing a momentary thrill."

"Morning coffees in bed, weekend pastries from our local bakery, lunchtime pilates, dog walks through the forest, a stroll through a fancy grocery shop on a Saturday morning. I really believe that happiness and contentment comes from romanticizing those little daily rituals that make everyday “regular” life so beautiful, exciting and romantic."
